Fort Smith, Arkansas – With campaign season underway, Arkansas Oklahoma Gas Corporation (AOG) is reminding candidates and referendum campaigns to be mindful of underground facilities when placing signs.

While there is little concern about signs no larger than a traditional real estate sign, for any larger signs that require digging, excavation, or the driving of fence posts, there’s a risk of hitting an underground facility like a natural gas pipeline, electrical line or fiber optic cable.

“At AOG, safety is our top priority. It’s important for those running for office, supporting a candidate or working for or against a ballot measure to ‘know what’s below’ before putting up campaign signs,” said Fred Kirkwood, Senior Vice President of Customer Development. “All candidates, volunteers, local party committees or political action committees should call 811 before placing any large campaign signs that require digging, excavation or the driving of fence posts, especially in the right of way on city streets or roads. Knowing the location of buried lines, pipes and cables – and then carefully working to avoid them – can prevent serious injury and protect critical utilities that individuals and companies rely on every day.”
